Today is the ground-breaking ceremony for the Elmira Build 2011. It will be a semi-detached building, for two large families, on Centre Street in Elmira. Construction is expected to begin this summer with the foundation in by August.
Unique about this project is the partnership with Elmira District Secondary School. Under the daily supervision of teacher, Scott Shantz, up to 15 trades students will be framing, roofing, shingling, insulating, dry-walling and doing general prep work for other trades. The students with their teacher will be on site for the semester spanning from September 2011 to January 2012.
The project will be under the supervision of Clare and Bonnie Brubacher, of Elmira. Clare is a builder and owner of Paradigm Homes, Bonnie is a Realtor. The Brubachers are serving as Project Managers.
The project will cost $500,000 for land, construction and all associated costs. MennoHomes has been fundraising on behalf of the project. With donations, waiver of development charges, contributions of gifts in kind (such as labour and materials) and small mortgages on each of the units, the amount left to raise is $70,000. We appeal to the community to contact Clare and Bonnie if they can contribute through their building trades or their building supplies. Prospective volunteers also may contact the Brubachers.
