Here's an interesting article from Coldwell Banker's US website on the process of buying building a custom home:
If you want a new home, but aren't interested in a cookie cutter subdivision, consider building your own custom home.
It's a "toss up" whether building your own home will be cheaper than buying one in a subdivision, said David Lupberger, a home improvement expert with ServiceMagic.com. A custom built home could run $100 per square foot, excluding land costs, he said, but up to as much as $300 per square foot with high-end finishes (excluding the cost of land).

Construction has recently begun on the "John M. Harper District Branch Library" at the corner of Fischer Hallman Road and Laurelwood Drive in Waterloo. This new library branch is being built together with a family YMCA.

Waterloo councillors have approved a zone change to allow a new 18 unit townhouse development to be built at Park and Allen Streets.

According to an article in the Waterloo Chronicle newspaper, an 18 unit townhouse development is in the works for the corner of Park and Allen Streets in Uptown Waterloo. This will be across the street from the 144 Park condo apartment building that is also planned for that area.
