We are delighted to report that the K-W Street Map & Service Guide is about to hit streets for the 7th time in 16 years. Soon 125,000 maps will be printed and close to 90,000 maps will be delivered by mid October through Canada Post to homes in Kitchener, Waterloo and Elmira.
Watch Fire Prevention Officers in action as they teach us how this new educational tool will instruct individuals within a wide age range on how to respond when disaster strikes.
Thanks to the generous support of our co-sponsors, The Economical Insurance Group and Waterloo Region Record, along with the 70 local businesses advertising in the 2010-2011 Street Map and Service Guide, we continue to move the importance of fire safety to the forefront of the minds and hearts of people in our community.
Cartography has been updated to reflect all the growth and changes to the street system over the past two years. This highly sought after street map raises funds for our local Fire Safety Program and is made possible because of the generous support of the 70 businesses who have advertised in it as well as our co-sponsors The Economical Insurance Group and the Waterloo Region Record.
Our first map was published in 1993 and raised enough money to get the Fire Safety Program off the ground. Today, the K-W Street Map is integral to maintaining all the tools in the Fire Safety Program. The program is run by Fire Prevention Officers from both the Kitchener Fire Department and Waterloo Fire Rescue. In addition to visiting schools throughout the year, officers attend and hold community events to educate both adults and children in Fire Safety.
By grade three every student in Kitchener and Waterloo will have been through the program at least once!
Previous editions of the map have helped purchase:
♦ Original Fire Safety House
♦ Fire Safety Training Van
♦ Kitchen Fire Simulator
♦ Two Training Vehicles
♦ Fire Extinguisher Training Units
♦ Mike on a Bike Children's Education Tool for both the Kitchener Fire Department and Waterloo Fire Rescue
Funds raised from this seventh edition street map have financed a new and improved Fire Safety House which our Fire Departments will use to educate the public on how to respond when confronted with a catastrophic event, be it a fire, carbon monoxide leak or weather related emergency.
The time to learn is not during a real crisis. The Fire Safety House will be an important addition to the Fire Safety Program, and will help save lives in our community by demonstrating to citizens of all ages how to calmly assess the emergency situation and make the right choices.
Everyone is invited to join us for a BBQ lunch
and the launch of the K-W Street Map on
Tuesday, September 29
and attend the unveiling of the new Fire Safety House.
